Donated to the Dorset OPC Project by Joy Waters
Gillingham Entry extracted from The 1875 Post Office Directory of Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset Donated to the Dorset OPC Project by Joy Waters GILLINGHAM is a market town of modern appearance, with a station on the South-Western railway, extensive parish and liberty on the River Stour, at the northern extremity of the county, in the petty sessional division of West Shaston, liberty of Gillingham, union and county court district of Shaftesbury, diocese of Salisbury, archdeaconry of Dorset and deanery of Shaftesbury, four and a half miles north-west from Shaftesbury, six and a half from Wincanton and one hundred and five from London by road. This parish includes the parochial chapelry of Bourton. It is rich in well-drained pasture grounds and abounds in dairies, the produce from which is a principal source of wealth to the inhabitants. The town is lighted with gas. The church of St. Mary the Virgin has, with the exception of the chancel, been rebuilt and consists of chance, nave, aisles with galleries, with lofty tower and a set of 6 bells and contains an organ. The register dates from 1559. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelries of East and West Stower and Motcomb annexed, joint yearly value 1,313 pounds, is the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury and held by the Rev. Henry Deane, B.C.L., formerly fellow of New College Oxford and prebendary of Salisbury. Here is a free school for boys who are permitted to remain four years; and near to the church is a National school; there is a British school also in Newbury. There are chapels for the Baptists, Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. Here are a small newsroom and a Temperance Hall in which lectures are given on temperance and morality, erected at the expense of the late Mr. Edward Neave, one of the Society of Friends. Here are some very excellent charities, amounting to about 400 pounds yearly. Gillingham is the headquarters of the 11 th Dorset Volunteers, commanded by Captain Tyrwhitt of Bourton, late of R.N. A school board, composed of 6 members, was formed here in June 1874 and new schools will shortly be erected. Here are three flour mills, an extensive brewery, several maltings, a silk mill, rope and twine factories, steam saw mills and a large bacon curing establishment giving employment to many hands. Bricks, tiles and drainpipes are extensively made here at the Gillingham Pottery Company's Works, at which also terracotta ware is manufactured. Here is a branch of the Wilts and Dorset Bank; also a Market house, and a market has been opened near the railway station. Fairs are held for cattle on Trinity Monday and for pleasure on the 12 th September. The market is held on alternate Mondays. The liberty has its own coroner. The Phoenix hotel affords excellent accommodation for families visiting this neighbourhood and for commercial gentlemen; conveyances in connection with the hotel meet the trains at the railway station. A sanguinary battle was fought between Edmund Ironside and Canute in this neighbourhood, in which Canute was defeated with great slaughter. The Dowager Marchioness of Winchester is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are John Williams Bell, esq., George Matthews, esq., Major Philip W. Matthews, J.P. and Lord Carbery. The area including Bourton is 8,355 acres, gross estimated rental, 20,779 pounds; rateable value 18,608 pounds. The population in 1861 was 3,036 and in 1871 was 4,037, of which 860 are in Bourton.
NEWBURY is a part of Gillingham; Wyke is 1 mile west. Wyke Hall, the seat of Ranald George M. Macdonald, esq., is a handsome residence. MILTON is a mile and a quarter north. The church of St. Simon & Jude is a handsome stone structure in the early English style, with lofty square tower containing 1 bell and consists of apsidal chancel, nave and aisles, divided from the nave by three fine arches resting on circular piers with highly carved capitals; the chancel is paved with encaustic tiles and contains an organ; the seats are all open and will accommodate 250 persons; it is a chapel of ease to the parish church; The Rev. William Shoreland, M.A., is curate. Close to the church is a National school. Milton Lodge, the residence of Mrs. Matthews, is a good building situated in park-like grounds; and Stock Hill, the seat of Major Philip W. Matthews, J.P. is a noble stone structure. HUNTINGFORD is 2 miles north. Parish Clerk, James Sheppard. Sexton, William Cox.
